Germany? (Part 3)

This is the 3rd part of this series. You can read the first part here and the second part here.

On this page, I will talk extensively about the Visa application process. I am currently in the process and awaiting final  decision from the embassy.

Proof of Funding: One key requirement in getting a Student Visa is proof of funds. Now even though most schools in Germany do not charge Tuition, you are required to show enough funds that will take care of your housing, health Insurance, clothing, transportation etc.

There are currently 3 ways of proving that you can afford to study in Germany

  • Blocked Account: A blocked account is a special account specifically created for International Students. With this account you are required to deposit an amount of 8,640 Euros. This amount can only be accessed when you arrive in Germany. Also, take note that you are limited to 720 monthly withdrawals. Of course you can deposit more that the required minimum amount. This will mean that every month, you have at your disposal 720 + the extra amount. At the moment, blocked accounts can only be opened by Deutsche Bank.

  • Sponsorship of Foreign Student: This will be done by a legal resident of Germany. It basically involves the local office giving approval for sponsorship. They will just check his financial ability to be sure he/she can afford to spend 720 euros on you for the duration of your studies. They will also check the motivation for sponsorship. After that an approval form will be given to them in which they have to post the original copy to you.

  • Scholarships: A scholarship from a recognized body in Germany or your home country is accepted. In the scholarship letter, it should be clear that the scholarship is worth a minimum of 8640 Euros and the method of disbursement of the scholarship amount should be clearly stated

If you don't have a scholarship or do not have anyone in Germany sponsoring your education, then your only way of providing proof of funds is by using the block accounts.

For opening a blocked account with Deutsche Bank you need the following

  • A filled Blocked account form ( Forms are avaliable Here)
  • Your admission letter
  • A statement of account with at least 8640 Euros
  • A clear copy of the data page of your passport
  • Authentication from the German Embassy
The German embassy in your home country is responsible for sending out the documents to Deutsche Bank. The student service of Deutsche Bank should get back to you with your account details or information on the next steps should your account not be opened.

Once you have your account details, you can proceed to deposit the required 8640 Euros. Please take note of a 150 charge on opening the account.

After your account is credited, you should receive an email with the credit information. You have to forward this confirmation to the embassy to complete your Visa application process.

Any questions? I will be glad to answer
