A lot of people underrate the importance of motivational letters, and simply copy sample ones from the Internet. I remember hearing the story of someone who was applying to a top notch grad school. He graduated top of his class. And he was trying to get into a top University. He was very confident of getting into the program so he didn't pay much attention to his motivational letter. He was confused when he received a letter of rejection from the school. It wasnt until he consulted other people that he realized that his motivational letter was extremely bad. As in terrible.
For some highly competitive programs, the motivational letter is what sets you apart from the rest.
The admission board reviewing your application has no idea who you are. The do not know about the intricacies of your life. They can only see scores and numbers. The motivational letter is the only way of showing them the personality behind these numbers. It exposes them to your soul.
When writing a motivational letter, close you eyes. Imagine all your dreams and aspirations. Where you see yourself going. Think about how much you want to go to school, how you want to meet classmates from all over the world. Imagine all the opportunities that schooling abroad comes with; the exchange programs, the internships, exploring other countries. Imagine how you hope to graduate top of your class. And how the degree is going to help you in landing a good job. Now write all these down.
Be clear, be concise, and above all use very simple English. Read over. And over again. Let someone else read and give feedback. Just take it very seriously
Sometimes I believe it was my motivational letter that helped me to get admission in some schools. As I have mentioned in previous posts, my GPA wasnt that great so I put a lot of efforts into writing an amazing motivational letter.
If you are at the stage of writing one, feel free to send it to me at foreignstudentingermany@gmail.com .I will gladly assist in proof reading.
